Upcoming Book Launch at UCL: Reconstruction as Violence in Assad’s Syria

I'm eagerly anticipating the upcoming book launch of Reconstruction as Violence in Assad's Syria, scheduled for June 9, 2025, from 17:00 to 19:00 at Room 403, University of London, Senate House, London WC1E 7HU. This event, hosted by UCL Urban Lab and The Bartlett Development Planning Unit (DPU), promises to be a profound exploration into the complexities of post-conflict reconstruction in Syria.UCL+1UCL+1

Edited by Nasser Rabbat and Deen Sharp, the book challenges the conventional notion that reconstruction is a neutral, apolitical process. Instead, it presents a compelling argument that reconstruction can perpetuate violence, extending conflict into the urban and social fabric of society. The contributors—comprising architects, urbanists, geographers, and historians—introduce critical concepts such as urbicide, domicide, and "civilian crisis architecture" to illustrate how rebuilding efforts can become instruments of continued oppression.

أتطلع بشغف لحضور فعالية إطلاق كتاب إعادة الإعمار كعنف في سوريا الأسد، والمقرر عقدها يوم الإثنين 9 يونيو 2025 من الساعة 17:00 إلى 19:00، في القاعة 403 بمبنى مجلس جامعة لندن، WC1E 7HU.تنظّم هذه الفعالية من قبل مختبر العمران في جامعة لندن (UCL Urban Lab) ووحدة التخطيط التنموي في كلية بارتليت (The Bartlett DPU)، ضمن احتفاليات الذكرى العشرين لتأسيس المختبر.

الكتاب، الذي حرّره ناصر ربّاط ودين شارب، يقدم مقاربة نقدية جريئة لمفهوم إعادة الإعمار، ويعيد مساءلة الفرضية الشائعة بأنها عملية "محايدة" أو "تنموية". على العكس، يقدّم الكتاب تحليلاً مفاده أن إعادة الإعمار قد تكون في حد ذاتها شكلاً من أشكال العنف المستمر، عبر ما يُمارس في الفضاء العمراني والاجتماعي من إقصاء وتهجير وإعادة تشكيل.

من خلال مفاهيم مثل قتل المدن (Urbicide) وتدمير البيوت (Domicide) و"عمارة الأزمة المدنية"، يعرض الكتاب كيف يمكن أن تصبح العمارة أداة للهيمنة، لا للشفاء.

أنا شخصياً مهتمة للغاية بما سيُطرح من نقاشات وأسئلة في هذه الفعالية، خاصة وأنني أعمل في مجال بناء السلام والتخطيط المعماري في سياقات ما بعد النزاع. هذا الحدث يمثل فرصة ثمينة للتفكير في البُعد السياسي للفضاء، وفي الدور الإشكالي الذي قد تلعبه العمارة حين تُوظف لإعادة ترتيب المجتمع بعد الحرب.

أعتقد أن هذا النوع من النقاش ضروري، خاصة في منطقتنا، حيث ما زالت عمليات "إعادة الإعمار" تُقدَّم كمشاريع تنموية خالية من المضمون السياسي، بينما هي في كثير من الأحيان إعادة إنتاج لأنماط السيطرة والعنف نفسها التي سبقت الصراع.
