Riwaq – Centre for Architectural Conservationرِواق – مركز المعمار الشعبيinvites you to participate in the upcoming webinar:
"Historical Heritage, Intervention, Methodology, and Procedures: Case Studies""التراث التاريخي: التدخل، المنهجية، والإجراءات – دراسات حالة"
with Spanish architect Carlos Quevedo Rojas, founder of Carquero Arquitectura.
In this session, Quevedo Rojas will present award-winning architectural interventions that have sparked both acclaim and controversy. Through detailed case studies—including the restoration of Matrera Castle in Andalusia and Morella Castle in Valencia—he will discuss the intervention criteria and procedural frameworks guiding conservation practice in complex historical contexts, particularly medieval fortifications.
This webinar is part of the "In-situ School: Archaeological Qalandiya" project, generously supported by the Barakat Foundation. It aims to provide architects, engineers, archaeologists, and heritage workers with applied knowledge around the conservation of archaeological finds and built heritage in historic settings.

A Note from the Field:
When I presented Matrera Castle in Mosul, a senior ICCROM official interrupted the lecture from the back of the room:"Let me stop you there—this is not conservation. I tried to have this project condemned."
I paused and let him speak. Then I responded:"It won a people’s award."His reply? "They don’t know. It’s our place to tell them what conservation is."
Tut tut, my technocratic and institutionalized friend. I hope you’ll join this webinar. Listen to the architect himself. Hear how he made his choices—not just structurally, but ethically, culturally, and contextually. Because conservation is not a singular truth. It’s a dialogue.
